The Cliffs
The house at dusk: dark timber and glass under a large gum tree, its interior lit warm.

A house of glass and dark timber on the Aravalli escarpment, held above the city by the oldest hills on earth.

The retreat

A house that keeps its voice down.

The Cliffs is one house, let to one party at a time. Four bedrooms, a long room that opens along its whole length, and a terrace cut into the slope where the escarpment falls away into dhau scrub.

There is no reception, no lobby, and nothing scheduled. Someone meets you at the gate, shows you where things are, and then leaves you to it.

See the rooms

The long room, with timber walls and a wall of glass onto the garden.
09:00 The haze burns off
Layered ridgelines fading into morning haze.

The Aravallis were old before the Himalayas existed.

They are worn down now — quartzite backs the colour of rust and iron, holding a thin forest of dhau and kikar. What is left of the range runs north through the city as the Ridge, which is why Delhi has any air at all.

The house sits on the escarpment edge. In the mornings the haze sits below you and burns off from the top down, and by nine you can see a long way.

13:00 Nobody has left the house

Four rooms, each with its own argument for staying in.

A dark, quiet bedroom with heavy curtains and low lamplight.

The ridge rooms

Two bedrooms face the drop. Blackout when you want it, and a window seat wide enough to give up the afternoon in.

A warm timber-lined lounge with deep seating and a low table.

The long room

Timber, books, a fire for the cold weeks in January. The glass folds back so the room and the terrace become one thing.

A dark stone bathroom with a freestanding tub under a high window.

The bath house

Stone, hot water without limit, and a door onto a private court where the only thing overlooking you is a tree.

Late light falling through a stand of trees.

16:30

By the second afternoon you stop reaching for your phone. There is nothing on it as good as the light.

18:45 Something is on the fire

Dinner happens outside, and it takes a while.

A cook comes in for the evenings if you want one — regional food, mostly from the plain below, eaten slowly at the long table on the terrace while the light goes orange and then goes.

Or the kitchen is yours, properly stocked, and nobody will interrupt you in it.

What a day here looks like

Questions

Yes. The Cliffs is let to one party at a time — you will not be sharing the house, the terrace or the grounds with other guests.

By road from Delhi. The exact address, directions and driving time are on the Airbnb listing, and the host sends door-to-door directions once a booking is confirmed.

October to March is the long season — cool mornings, clear afternoons, and fires worth lighting in January. The monsoon turns the ridge green and is worth seeing if you do not mind rain.

All of it lives on the Airbnb listing, which is always current — nightly rates, the calendar, minimum stay, the cancellation policy and the house rules. Booking through Airbnb also means your payment and your stay are covered by their protections.
